Jane Cornish Smith's 2-day Cold Wax Workshop

Abstract Compositions and Abstract Landscape

Saturday, June 13th and Sunday, June 14th, 2020

10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day

Explore the endless possibilities of abstract painting with cold wax! Take a thought-provoking immersion into the abstract use of luminous cold wax with oil paint, pastel, inks, mineral spirits, mark-making tools, brushes, scrapers and imagination. Composition, color and contrast will be addressed, along with an exploration of visual elements such as line, shape, pattern, texture, mass, and depth. This versatile medium yields rich and emotive surfaces. Develop your own personal expression in this fun and freeing workshop!

 

This new 2-day format (description below) has proven to be especially valuable in introducing techniques, layering and bringing work to greater potential! Day One:

  • Brief introduction on the characteristics of cold wax medium
  • PowerPoint on artists working with cold wax, looking at individual approaches on art elements and principles: shape, color, value, line, texture, pattern, contrast, and composition for compelling landscape abstractions!
  • Guided exercise on cropping photo references for optimal compositions, thumbnail sketches, and review of black and white value scale
  • Demo- taping and wet-into-wet warm up paintings- participants create four small works
  • Demo on mixing a color palette with CWM and oil, initial layers
  • Participants create first layers on Arches Oil Paper and cradled panels; one-on-one instruction

 

Day Two:

  • Demonstration on adding layers with CWM/oil, powders, pigments sticks, alcohol inks; additive and subtractive techniques
  • Participants continue with subsequent layers; one-on-one instruction
  • Sharing of one-of-a-kind abstracted landscape artworks!

Bring:

  • Bring Oil paint - this can be a variety of your favorite colors but be sure to have a good range and plenty of white. Any brand will do.
  • Palette knife for mixing color and applying medium
  • Optional- A smock or apron - CWM can get messy
  • Optional- Photos or printouts: Inkjet or Xerox’s of landscape or other photos from your favorite places, objects, etc with a good contrast of lights and darks. There will be some photo references provided at the workshop, but more meaningful if you have your own!
  • Optional- A sketchbook for notes
  • Bring Paper towels - one roll per person provided but please bring more
  • Bring Tape - blue or green, 1"

 

 

About Jane:

 

 

Originally from Canada, Texas-based artist Jane Cornish Smith’s nomadic childhood, along with her artist mother, fostered an appreciation for creative expression from a young age. Jane produces paintings and sculptural work with diverse materials and subject matter, but has concentrated in recent years on cold wax and encaustic mediums. She has attended artist residencies at the International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy; Vermont Studio Center; and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and earned BFA, MLA, and MFA degrees. An award-winning artist, her work hangs at the University of Texas at Tyler, Brookhaven College, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, Tenby Museum and Art Gallery in Wales, the Cancer Support Community of North Texas, and others. Cancellation policy:

In the event of cancellation after the workshop is paid in full by May 1st, 2020, $365.00 will be refunded if someone from the waiting list is able to attend. Non-payment of the $375 balance by May 1st, 2020, may result in someone form the waiting list taking the space so please be sure to watch for the balance due email announcement and please be in touch if there are any changes.
