Jane Cornish Smith's 2-day Cold Wax Portrait Workshop

Discover the versatility, translucence, and depth of cold wax in portraiture! Mine the possibilities of it's buttery consistency combined with oil paint, mineral spirits, pastels, mark-making tools, brushes, scrapers, and NO heat to reveal layers of luminous color. Artist Jane Cornish Smith will demonstrate and guide participants through portraiture creations. The hands-on exploration of composition, shape, and value allows for an understanding of the medium and dynamic expressive work.  All levels are welcome. Most supplies are included; see below:

 

 

 

Provided and Supplies

Provided:

  • 2 encaustic gessoed 11x14 cradled boards ... I will have more boards for sale at the workshop.
  • 6 sheets of Arches oil painting paper but you can buy more here
  • Messermeister Squeegee: Provided for use at the workshop
  • Bowl scrapers: If you'd like to purchase one of your own, here's the link: Bowl Scraper
  • Brayers: Provided for use at the workshop. f you'd like to purchase one of your own, here's the Inovart link
  • or Speedball brayers in various sizes
  • Squeegees: Provided for use at the workshop: if you'd like to purchase one of your own, here's a link
  • Incising tools: Provided for use at the workshop: but please feel free to bring more of your own: various incising tools: wood skewers, palette knives and toothpicks
  • Palettes and wax paper: provided but you are welcome to bring more
  • Turpentine or mineral spirits: Provided
  • Cold Wax medium: 12 ounces of Cold Wax medium Provided:  but if you'd like to buy some of your own, here's a link
  • Charcoal and sandpaper: Provided
  • Silicone spatulas: Provided for use at the workshop —2 GLOUE silicone spatulas  but here's a link if you'd like to buy your own
  •  Scraping tools: Provided but you are welcome to bring more cardboard and mat board squares for scraping.
  • Stone Paper: Provided
  • Mat board to mount Stone Paper: Provided
  • Alcohol Inks: Provided  but you can buy more here:  Jane's favorites: adirondack rust/stonewash/pitch black
  • Containers for turp: Provided

 

Bring:

  • Bring Oil paint (any brand) - this can be a variety of your favorite colors but be sure to have a good range and lots of white, also cadmium red, cad yellow light, yellow ochre, alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue, raw umber, burnt sienna, and any other colors you may have on hand.
  • Bring four 8.5 x 11 inch photocopies of your favorite photographic headshots or selfies with good contrast of lights and darks.
  • Bring Paper towels - one roll per person provided but please bring more
  • Bring Tape - blue or green, 1- 1.5”

 

 

 

About Jane

Originally from Canada, Texas-based artist Jane Cornish Smith’s nomadic childhood, along with her artist mother, fostered an appreciation for creative expression from a young age. Jane produces paintings and sculptural work with diverse materials and subject matter, but has concentrated in recent years on cold wax and encaustic mediums.  She has attended artist residencies at the International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy; Vermont Studio Center; and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and earned BFA, MLA, and MFA degrees. An award-winning artist, her work hangs at the University of Texas at Tyler, Brookhaven College, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, Tenby Museum and Art Gallery in Wales, the Cancer Support Community of North Texas, and others. She enjoys teaching, and making art from her glass-lined studio in rural Lone Oak, Texas. www.janecornishsmithart.com

Cancellation policy:

The $100 deposit is non-refundable. In the event of cancellation, after the workshop is paid in full; $275.00 will be refunded if someone from the waiting list is able to attend. I'll be sending email reminders belfore the due date. Non-payment of the $285 by the due date may result in someone from the waiting list taking the space, so please be on the lookout.
