Saturday, February 2nd and Sunday, February 3rd, 2019

10:00am to 4:00 pm each day

The cost of the workshop is $395

In this two day workshop, Skyler McGee will guide students through tangible steps to bring increased visual and conceptual complexity to their work. Rooted in concrete techniques, the students will learn to demystify the qualities of sophisticated compositions and use their own innate aesthetics to create deeper, more meaningful paintings. The workshop will address the use of substrates, subject matter, structure and surface to delve into each layer as a distinct opportunity for art-making. With an emphasis on abstraction, the workshop encourages risk and highlights the artist’s capacity to tell personal and social stories. Students will also experiment with transfers, carbon drawings, incising, stencils, collage and adding surprising elements of mixed media. Throughout the workshop, Skyler infuses the technical skills she teaches with substantive thoughts on sound artistic practice, cultivating inspiration, and pursuing artistry in a rigorous and sustainable way.

Skyler McGee

Skyler McGee is a mixed media painter working in Jacksonville, Illinois. Her paintings border abstraction and representation, often layering complex drawings with patterns, textiles and painterly mark-making. These images synthesize into works which are beautiful, textured and complex. Originally from the Rocky Mountains, there is always a hint of the rugged natural world where she derives most of her inspiration. Skyler is represented by Space Galley in Denver, Colorado. She enjoys baby goats, dark chocolate and bluesy jazz.
