This Master Class is available to artists who have taken either a Powerful Design and Personal Color workshop with Pamela in person or through her online course. The MASTER CLASS
Artists who take this class are familiar with the cold wax/oil technique and it is highly recommended they have already taken my “Powerful Design - Personal Color” workshop (or equivalent). This is an upper level class which builds on the principles learned in the Color and Design class, and assumes you have a fairly good understanding of what constitutes strong design and personal color.
The next step in your growth as an artist relies on pushing out of your comfort zone, whether that be a “go to” color palette, favorite tools, familiar surfaces, or formulaic ways of working/thinking. Introducing unfamiliarity and pushing through stale boundaries requires courage and an explorative and experimental attitude. It requires risk. It also asks you to “let go” of what you already know to a certain extent, so you can explore the unknown. Each artist will be asked to work in ways that are contrary to their normal working method, in a “playful” and fun way. This will create new and challenging “problems”. By going in a direction that is unfamiliar and uncomfortable, you learn even more about what you love-because it is what you love that will save you, again and again and allow you to solve your problems in a way that is uniquely - YOU. I will ask you probing questions as you progress and we’ll document your progress. There will be a few short assignments and questions which I will ask you to complete prior to the beginning of the workshop.
In addition, now that you understand the design elements (value, color, line, shape, texture, direction and size), we will continue to refine by exploring the design principles (ie, rhythm, unity, balance, repetition, harmony, dominance, variation, etc.). We will use this information to work on older paintings you bring in, perhaps ones you were stuck on in the past. We will spend 1:1 time talking about these works and we will also learn a great deal from each other’s methods of problem solving.
So, if you are open to four days of pushing yourself in new directions, letting go of “familiar” and taking a walk on the wild and unfamiliar side, you may well find yourself reinvigorated, surprised, excited, exhausted, and happy you took this Master Class! Expect to be challenged.
Pamela will create a customized MASTER CLASS experience for each artist based on review of each artist's work and their answers to a series of questions emailed prior to the workshop.

For those of you who live close to the workshop location, please feel free to bring 1-3 old works you are stuck on, and larger boards you would like to work on. If you bring Baltic birch panels, be sure to gesso them ahead of time with 2 coats of acrylic gesso. See provided encaustic gessoed cradled panel info below. Those using Arches Oil Paper do not need to gesso this paper as it is designed for oil/cold wax paintings. Basically, if you have more room, feel free to bring all the things you like to work with and can comfortably carry.
For this Master Class we will be scaling up!
Our substrate focus will be Arches Oil Paper and or Multi Media boards but one 16x20 Gessoed cradled board will be provided for In-person participants. See more about the paper and size options below.
Bring Arches oil paper; please bring several 22x30 sheets

Bring 1 roll of white artist's tape or 1 roll of blue tape
Bring a few oil painting brushes (IF you would like to learn how to make fluid marks with cold wax medium!)
Bring your favorite texture and mark-making tools
Bring an Apron
Bring Several palette knives, plastic or metal
Bring Drawing materials: graphite pencils, carpenter's pencils, Cray-Pas, RF Pigment Sticks, graphite powder, really anything you like to make marks with! (see below for places to get these items - you want to bring a WIDE assortment of mark making tools
1-2 Messermeister Bowl Scrapers - I have several to share here but you can purchase your own
1" Silicone Colour Shaper tool, plus any other sizes you like
1-2 Rubber Brayers - I have many to share during the workshop but you may like to purchase your own

Silicone tools - Search for Silicone Wide Firm Flat Brush Size 1 and 1.5 ($16 and $17, respectively). There are many sizes but the 1" and 1.5" are especially useful.
Messermeister Silicone Bowl Scraping tool (or similar) There are several to share at the studio but you'll likely want some of your own
Clay Sculpture Tools - I love these, in a few different sizes - Kbsing Set of 5 Flexible Silicone Clay Sculpture Color Shapers (#3)
Oiler Boiler: Popular tool with a very fine point for applying gamsol for creating "gamsol drips" Either size will be just fine (18 gauge is a larger hole than the 25 gauge).
Rubber brayers: Inovart is a good brand. One brayer is fine for this class: Inovart Snap Out Soft Rubber Brayer 4 by INOVART, or speedball is fine, too - Many Provided for use in the workshop and for purchase via Pamela's resource link above
Several palette knives, plastic or metal (I love these: I recommend Ateco 1385 Offset Spatula with 4.5-inch Stainless Steel Blade, wood handle, $5.25 each (I own about 10)
Blue Painter's or Artist's tape (for masking off on paper and on your panels; 1" width should be fine). Blue painter's tape is less expensive and available at any hardware store. You can also search for "white artist's tape on Amazon, $20/roll
We will be using cell phone cameras in class - if you don't have one, we can share - but if you do have one, please bring it!
Gamblin Galkyd Gel ("G-Gel"; use this for stronger paint film, slightly satiny finish and quicker drying) for: Gamblin Galkyd G Gel, 150 Ml -
RF Pigment sticks - You can bring your own RF pigment sticks; The Encaustic Center also sells these at 20% off; RF will also provide some free samples.

(Look around your home for mark making tools: china markers, carpenter's pencils, look around - fill your box with lots of mark making options!
Optional: A 4oz or 8oz squeeze bottle to make a 50:50 mix of Gamsol and Galkyd - IF you like "drippy" paint! (any empty nozzle bottle (capped) works fine - like those that come with hair coloring kits.)
About Pamela Caughey:
Pamela Caughey grew up in Wisconsin, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from UW-Madison in 1983. After moving with her family to Hamilton, MT in 1986, she began her serious study of art, and in 2010 received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Montana School of Art. Her work is in the permanent collection of several museums and public buildings nationally and internationally and also appears in the newly published book by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin, “Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts, Conversations”. After teaching foundations courses at the University of Montana, Bitterroot College, Montana, she is now a full time studio artist and teaches workshops from her Hamilton, Montana studio and around the world.
