This workshop is for artists working with cold wax medium and oils who have a basic understanding of how to create texture and layers in this medium, but want to explore the next step - how to create a powerful composition using dynamic color and powerful design. Each student will be encouraged to express their personal voice through a better understanding of what they love most in their art. Students will learn how to mix and apply a wide range of color, grays, and glazes differing in value, temperature and saturation through fun and explorative exercises. Through demonstrations, presentations, and working one on one, each student will learn how to strengthen their compositions by understanding what makes strong design. Students will create both small studies and larger works to explore key concepts. With this information, each student will be able to approach a painting at any stage of development and understand the "when" and "how" to pull their paintings together to a satisfying conclusion. We will also discuss the importance of an experimental approach and risk taking during the creative process. The majority of workshop time will be devoted to painting, with helpful demos and presentations to better understand key concepts presented. There will also be time for individual critique and discussion of each student's personal artistic goals and progress.

For those of you who live close to the workshop location;You are encouraged to bring 1-2 works you are stuck on and any additional boards you’d like to work on.
If you bring some of your own Baltic birch panels, be sure to gesso them ahead of time with 2 coats of acrylic gesso. See provided gessoed cradled panel info below. Those using Arches Oil Paper do not need to gesso this paper as it is designed for oil/cold wax paintings. Basically, if you have more room, feel free to bring all the things you like to work with and can comfortably carry.
Gessoed Cradled Panels Provided: Although the focus will be working on Arches oil paper, two 12x12 and one 16x16, these Gessoed Cradled Panels will be provided as additional options

Bring Oil paints: (student grade is fine, other professional artist brands are: Gamblin, Charvin, Williamsburg, Winsor and Newton - go for the best price!).

Bring White artist's tape 1” or blue tape for taping paper into quadrants
Bring a few oil painting brushes (IF you would like to learn how to make fluid marks with cold wax medium!)

Bring Drawing materials: graphite pencils, carpenter's pencils, Cray-Pas, RF Pigment Sticks, graphite powder, really anything you like to make marks with! (see below for places to get these items - you want to bring a WIDE assortment of mark making tools - Resources

We will be using cell phone cameras in class - if you don't have one, we can share - but if you do have one, please bring it!
About Pamela Caughey:
Pamela Caughey grew up in Wisconsin, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from UW-Madison in 1983. After moving with her family to Hamilton, MT in 1986, she began her serious study of art, and in 2010 received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Montana School of Art. Her work is in the permanent collection of several museums and public buildings nationally and internationally and also appears in the newly published book by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin, “Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts, Conversations”. After teaching foundations courses at the University of Montana, Bitterroot College, Montana, she is now a full time studio artist and teaches workshops from her Hamilton, Montana studio and around the world.

Cancellation policy:
In the event of cancellation after the balance of $875 is paid in full, by December 10th, 2021; $865.00 will be refunded if someone from the waiting list is able to attend.
