The Shape of Painting Workshop with Susan Stover

Friday, March 4th, Saturday, March 5th and Sunday March 6th, 2022

10am to 4pm each day

The cost of the workshop is $775.00

Are you feeling “boxed in” by the square or rectangle of your canvas or panel? This mixed media and encaustic class focuses on moving away from the traditional format of painting and the possibilities of building and constructing with paper and wood. Participants will explore relationships of shape, image, and mark-making as well as the dimensionality of painting and painting as object. Creating a series of gestural paintings on paper from prompts in class, we’ll cut them up and stitch, staple, weave or glue to build compositions. Working with scraps of wood, students will also build supports and shapes for encaustic or other paint mediums. Discussion and concepts to include how we experience painting, how it exists in space, and possibilities for installation.

    About Susan Stover

Susan Stover is a San Francisco Bay Area artist who creates paintings and sculptures that explore themes of cultural identity and mythology. With the study of ethnic patterns and of utilitarian and sacred objects in non-western cultures, her work embraces ritual, tradition, and meditation through repetitive labor.

Originally from the Midwest, Susan Stover received a BFA from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and her MFA from California College of Art in Oakland, CA. Both of her degrees concentrated in textiles and painting. Since getting her MFA in 1991, she has taught extensively including being on the faculty at University of California-Davis, taught workshops in Australia, India, Italy, France, Mexico and throughout the U.S.

Susan currently lives in the northern California wine country. Her work often combines traditional textile techniques such as basketry, stitching, batik, and indigo dyeing with encaustic and other paint mediums. She is interested in creating work that has historical and cultural reference at the same time bringing it into a personal and contemporary context. Her inspiration comes from traveling and immersing herself in other cultures, absorbing the colors and textures of a place and learning about local artisan traditions. She is represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY and Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley, CA.
